Did anyone else LOVE the Disney Channel original movie “Zenon: Girl Of The 21st Century”? One of my absolute favorite movies growing up, and still to this day, “Zenon” had it all: great set design, great clothes, great humor, great dialogue, great actors, great characters (including a kick-ass shero who stuck to her gut feelings and never gave up, a great best friend anyone would want to have, a nice aunt, a totally believable band and celebrity idol, a villain who was oily and subtly horrifying, parents who were just like the parents we knew…I could go on and on), a great plot, fab and original lingo you caught yourself saying in real life (Ceedus lapidus! Fun major!”) and one of the best songs ever written (“Supernova Girl”–look it up). It was basically “The Computer Wore Tennis Shoes” of my generation (if you haven’t seen the original 1969 version starring Joe Flynn, Kurt Russell, Frank Welker (yes, the Frank Welker who voiced Fred Jones from Scooby-Doo”–you’ll recognize the voice), Michael McGreevey, Debbie Paine, Willie Schallert, and others, you should go watch it as soon as you can. It has fabulous humor, a great story, and fabulous special effects–no crappy CGI!).
When I saw Oktoberfest Barbie, her hair-do made my mind jump back to Zenon’s double antelope buns on her first day at school on Earth. What would Zenon and her friends look like when she grew up? So I bought a couple of Barbie Volkswagen Beetles (is that anyone else’s dream car from a childhood in the 2000’s?) and made a tribute to Zenon to grace my shelf.
From left to right:
Nebula Wade (portrayed by Barbie Fashionista: Artsy 2010)
Zenon Kar (portrayed by Barbie Dolls of the World Oktoberfest 2006)
Linx (portrayed by Pretty Flowers Barbie 1998)
The Person Who Should Have Replaced Horrible Margie: Proto Zoa’s Sister (Amoeba? Radiolarian? Give me some name suggestions in the comments!) (portrayed by Vitamin C doll 2000)
Happy birthday to all the Cancers and July babies!
By the way, the etsy store RAVARLAGARI sells reproduction holographic disk earrings like the one Zenon wore.
